K-8th Grade Reading Specialist About MVRCS : Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, MA was founded in 1998. The school serves over 1,600 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Mystic Valley students in Grades K-12 report to school in dress code and are in attendance for 200 days of instruction. A normal school day is 60 minutes longer than most traditional public schools.

Together, these factors have enabled MVRCS to deliver on its promise of providing its students with the opportunity to obtain a world-class education.

Job Description : Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent (K-8), and in accordance with the Board of Trustees’ policies, the Reading Specialist will oversee Mystic Valley Regional Charter School’s Reading Intervention program.

The Reading Specialist will work directly with students, primarily students in Grades K-6 but possibly up through 8, to improve known deficiencies in reading or language for at risk or below grade level students.

The Reading Specialist is responsible for analyzing both internal and external data to a) identify students at risk and in need of remediation and b) develop strategies and then supporting curriculum to assist the students reach grade level proficiency.

Responsibilities : Serve as primary contact for the parents of at-risk students in the areas of reading and / or language acquisition to enroll them in the program.

Collaborate with other Reading Specialists and classroom teachers to ensure curriculum is consistent. Use Direct Instruction for reading intervention.

Maintain fidelity to school approved programs and avoid introducing / developing any curriculum that is not aligned to Direct Instruction or Core Knowledge.

Teach at risk students throughout the day as set forth in a teacher’s schedule. Complete daily student lesson plans / service logs, as appropriate.

Teach additional at-risk students throughout the year as they become identified or enroll in the school. Prepare quarterly progress reports to be sent home with the report cards to the parents of the students with a reading service.

Attend parent teacher conferences. Perform appropriate supplemental duties to support school operations, as assigned by the assistant director.

Requirements : Three or more years of experience in a similar role is preferred. At least a bachelor’s degree with a reading specialization preferred.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to write reports and correspondence.

Ability to evaluate information and determine / recommend an appropriate course of action. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all school requirements, state and federal laws, and MVRCS policies.

Experience evaluating student skills and writing reports interpreting / summarizing findings. Strong collaborative, teaching, coaching, and leadership skills to support student programming and work in a team setting.

Ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.

Successful completion of applicable MTEL tests within one year of employment. The position will be evaluated yearly and will be an annual appointment.
